The digital edition of the correspondence of Hans Georg and Hermann Nägeli presents all letters written by and addressed to the Zurich music publisher Hans Georg Nägeli (1773-1836) and his son Hermann (1811-1872), which are preserved in the collections of the Zentralbibliothek Zürich. In total, there are approximately 3,800 documents dating from 1790 to 1872.
The letters contain extensive information on the music publishing industry of the time; the production and distribution of musical works are discussed, as well as the issue of unauthorized reprints, since Hans Georg Nägeli was among the pioneers in efforts toward copyright protection. In addition, political, (music) pedagogical, and everyday topics are addressed. The correspondence thus represents a diverse historical and musicological testimony.
The digital edition of the Nägeli correspondence is aimed at both academia and music-historical Nägeli research as well as the general public, which has shown increasing interest in Nägeli since the anniversary year 2023. The focus of the edition is on the content of the correspondence. It therefore aims to provide a well-readable text that satisfies the curiosity of the general readership as well as the reuse and further processing by specialized research. In addition to the digitized letters, the wording of all letter documents is made accessible in diplomatic transcription. The index, linked to authority data, includes persons, works, institutions, and places. Selected correspondences are provided with an introduction and commentary.
